Halloween Blockheads: Clip Art Freebie

I saw some really cute Halloween cards at Target that were basically squares.  I couldn't help but think what a fun challenge it would be to design Halloween images from squares.

Thanks Target for a fun creative trigger!

Here are the results... feel free to grab a copy if you think you can use the images.  As usual the black line and colored images are included in the file.  All images are 300 dpi, png, transparent images ready for resizing to fit your projects.

Fire Safety Week: Photo Booth

Fire Safety Week is around the corner.  What a perfect opportunity for some photo booth fun.  I created a Fire Safety Photo Booth Packet with props and writing prompts.  Lucky me... one of the mom's offered her firefighter's coat for the activity.

If you don't have a fire fighter's coat, a yellow raincoat and some black duct tape work just as well!

This is a great way to add little "pop" to your Fire Safety Week activities.

Props include:
*Firefighter's hat
*Hydrant
*Hose
*Ax
*Fire Extinguisher

Writing Prompts Include:

* Label It
* My Safety Information
* Firefighters Can, Have, Do Chart
* My Fire Safety Rules

Word Work: Set 2

We just finished working on our Set 2 of "Word Family" Work.  We worked on "ug", "in", "ip" and "op" as well as another 20 high frequency words.  The stations are becoming more familiar and the students are becoming more independent.  Now that routines are set for some of the activities, I've been able to introduce new variations of many of the activities.  In total, we completed 44 word family activities last month

I included the following activities for each word family.  Some of the activities were used in our "word work" stations.  Some activities were sent home as homework.  The kids loved the activities and are becoming proficient with both word families and CVC skills.

Here are the activities I used for each word family:
  • Word Charts (posted in the classroom)
  • Picture Cards (laminated and housed in various centers)
  • Memory Card game
  • BAM! Card Game
  • Spin and Write
  • Rainbow Words
  • Dot It - Pin It (The kids LOVE "Pin It")
  • See It - Spell It
  • A, B, C Order (We moved up to 6 words for alphabetizing)
  • Make a Word
  • Color by Word (Boy, was this a hit!)
  • Review Activity

Word Cards were very helpful for encouraging independent learning.

Memory Game and Bam! Games changed theme as well as words each week.

This month I introduced Spin and Write

We completed Rainbow Words using either crayons, colored pencils, markers, or water colors.

See It - Spell It and Circle the Words

A, B, C Order and Fill in the Sentences Activities

Make a Word provided great CVC practice.

Students LOVED this hole punch activity: Read and Punch!

Color by Word was the most requested activity.

Each week ended with a Review activity: Glue It, Spell It.

We "Owl" Love Fall: Kids Completed Projects

I completely enjoyed this month's art/craft activity with my little firsties.  Today we worked on the "We Owl Love Fall"  Craft and Literacy Activities.    As promised here are some pictures.

They just had to model their owls for the camera!

Every child's work was wonderfully unique.

So dang cute... all of them!

Also, the kids LOVED, LOVED, LOVED -  Fall Mixed Up by Bob Raczka (please see the description here).

We "Owl" Love Fall: Super Easy Craft and Center Activities

The little firsties that I am working with LOVE art projects.  This early in the school year, I am finding that simple is the most successful. We "Owl" Love Fall is our next project. We'll be putting the following owls together tomorrow and following up with a 5 senses writing prompt and acrostics poem writing activity.  I am saving the "I Love Fall Because..."  and the Roll and Cover Math Owls for next week.

I'll also be reading the following book as an introduction and brainstorming kick-off to the concept of our fall 5 senses.  The rhythm of the text and mixed up concepts makes for a hilarious read and great critical thinking discussion.  It's a hoot!

"Every Septober, Every Octember, Fall fills my senses with scenes to remember." "Bears gather nuts. Geese hibernate. Squirrels fly south in big figure eights." Fall is all mixed up in this silly book from Bob Raczka! Can you find his mistakes in the words and pictures? (Amazon excerpt).

I'll post pictures of the finished products this weekend.
 Happy fall ya all!
