Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss: Photo Booth Props and Writing Prompts

We were in class only three days last week... and why, might you ask?  Rodeo Break!  That's right in Tucson all k-12 schools and some of the colleges get Rodeo Days off.

It may sound silly but it's a BIG deal here.  We have a huge parade and days and days of rodeo competition.  Truth be told, when I was a child I thought Rodeo was a national holiday :).

So with a few extra days of "free time" on my hands, I decided to create a Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss Photo Booth mini-packet for use next week.

I created a hat, a tie , and of course the children's famous pet fish.  I will be reading the story, and the children will respond to one of three writing prompts.  I left a space on each writing prompt to either draw a picture or glue on their photo booth pictures.

My granddaughters kindly offered to model the props.

The packet contains 3 props and 3 Common Core Standards aligned writing prompts.

Have a great week!

In Like a Lion and Out Like a Lamb: Craftivity and Writing Activities

Where has this month gone?  By Saturday we'll be halfway through the month and planning for  March.

I had to get a bit of a jump on things because I'm heading off (tomorrow) to San Francisco for a conference.  I'll be spending the next three days listening to a wonderful group of presenters talk about brain development within the context of social competence and self-control.  I'll be sure to share when I get back!

I decided I better get my March craftivity and writing packet ready now.  I couldn't resist the In Like a Lion Out Like a Lamb theme.  I am really happy with the ease of the craft itself.  I always try to make the craft easy AND cute.  This can be a tough balance at times.

This craftivity packet contains 2 VERY easy crafts.  The lion and the lamb are quick as 1, 2, 3 to put together and they look just as cute in black and white as they do in color!  I have also included four language arts activities.

  • In Like a Lion and Out Like a Lamb Means... (writing prompt)
  • What Does this Mean?  (match idioms to their meanings/cut and paste)
  • Remembering Weather Adventures (writing prompt)
  • My Favorite Type of Weather (writing prompt)
The packet also includes all the patterns and illustrated directions for easy assembly.

Well, I'm off to San Francisco!  Have a great rest of the week.

I Love Lisa's Common Core Crunch Units!

I own quite  few of  Lisa Mattes (Growing Firsties) Common Core Crunch units.  She creates and offers them each month.  I continue to be thrilled with each and every packet I get.

The literacy activities are spot-on perfect for the1st graders that I tutor.  They are engaging, hands-on activities that focus on the skills that my little ones struggle to with.  Lisa's Common Core Crunch units are beautifully organized and so easy to use.  Print and go is great as far as I am concerned.

I was thrilled this month to see that Lisa has also created a Math focused Common Core Crunch unit and as well as the ELA Common Core Crunch unit.  I now own both and they are FABULOUS!

To get a detailed look at the some of the contents of  each unit,  just click here to head over to her January 28th blog post.  You'll see why I love these packages so much.

Lisa has kindly offered to give away her February Common Core Crunch Math  and ELA unit to one of my lucky followers.  It so easy to enter.  Just follow Growing Firsties blog or follow on Pinterest or Facebook.  Actually, you can do all three for three entries.

You can enter beginning tonight at midnight.
