Wild About 1st Grade Art Activity Freebie

The August art session with my little "firsties" was a HUGE success.  We created "Wild About 1st Grade" self-portraits.   They turned out so dang cute!  It was a lot of fun to combine some guided art along with "do your own thing" directions.

The bulletin board is adorable.  We'll be adding their writing prompt responses to "I'm WILD About 1st Grade Because..." as soon as we finish the edit process.

I created a file with the guided art directions, supply list, and writing prompts.  Feel free to download this activity file and enjoy it with your little ones.  This is a "no fail" activity that make for a super cute parents night bulletin board.

Fall Center Activities... Last Sale Day on TpT and a 10-Frame Freebie

Just a reminder about the big TpT sale... it end tonight.  Here are some great fall items marked 28% off.

The "firsties" that I volunteer with are really struggling with "Making 10".  Their teacher asked me if I could put together a quick 10-Frame recording sheet.  They will be practicing with:
  • Two-sided chips
  • Lima beans sprayed red on one side, left white on the other
Each child will be given 10 items and asked to do lots of "shake, pour, and record".   Here is a copy of the the recording sheet.  It's nothing special, but it's very functional!  Help yourselves if you think you can use it with your little ones.  Just click on the image to download it.

Doodle Birds Clip Art Freebie

I had a great summer full of travel, fun, sun, and art projects.  Now it's time to "hit the road running".  I am very excited about getting back to my "firsties" volunteer work.

I have enjoyed working with Mrs. B and her students for the last few years.  I will continue working with 6-8 students each Monday morning for reading support.  AND... I'm also going to be teaching art once or twice a month with the entire class.

Mrs. B has graciously "given me" the hallway bulletin board to showcase the students' art projects.

This is going to be such a BLAST!!!   I do enjoy teaching at the college level BUT my 1st grade volunteer work is truly the highlight of my week.

On another note:
I created a few "Doodle Birds"clip art pieces this week.  I'll be putting them on TPT, but if you would like a free copy, just leave a comment along with your email address and I'll be happy to send you the zip file.

There are 22 Doodle Birds, 300dpi, png files in the packet.  I am happy to share!

Father's Day Family Fun (with Art)

I was thrilled that three out of my four children (and three grandchildren) were able to come visit us on Father's Day.  We did a lot of "hanging out", swimming and eating!

I also asked each adult and child to make a mask for me.  I really like masks.  I rolled out clay slabs and provided a head-shaped template.  I wanted everyone to start with the same size/weight head shape.  This will make hanging them a little easier for me.

The rules were: NO RULES!  I did demonstrate how to successfully attach clay pieces, cut clay, and add texture.  Then I gave everyone lots of clay, texture tools, and anything else they asked for.

Everyone was a GREAT sport.  Everyone participated and nine beautiful masks were made by artists ranging from ages 4 to 62!

Here are the results "in the raw".   Once they are completely dried, I will put on a clear glaze and fire them.  They will then be added to my "art gallery"  located on the garden walls of the entry to our home.

I learned a few things from this family project:

  • Everyone enjoys an opportunity to be creative.
  • The people you least expect will spend the most time on a project.
  • No one is ever too old to enjoy an art project.
  • Family art sessions are a great way to spend some time enjoying each others company.
I can't wait until our next family get together... I already have a new art project in mind.

Speaking of clay... my husband poured two benches for me to mosaic.  I have just finished designing, cutting, glazing, firing, and detailing hundreds of pieces of clay.  The benches are put together, glued, grouted, and sitting in our back yard.

So how's my summer going????  Just GREAT, full of fun, family, and art projects.  What more could I ask for!
